manage personal finances

I’ve spent hours of my life toiling over virtual cities in Maxis’ Sim City series, and it must have rubbed off after all these years. I still enjoy meticulously planning infrastructure, zoning and carefully tweaking finances to this day.

The other day whilst trying to work, I accidentally (oops) went looking for some online heirs to the Sim City throne. Despite simple Flash games lacking the depth of even the original Sim City, I guessed there had to be a few decent, free city building games out there.

id="more-61297">

ElectroCity

style="text-align: center;">

A simple turn-based Flash game created by New Zealand energy company Genesis Energy to give players young and old a shot at managing a town or city’s growth and impact. Players must pay close attention to the levels of energy used, sustainability and environmental factors.

Players are given 151 turns to alter tax rates, build things, destroy things and generally oversee the planning of a city from an environmental point of view. It is up to you to keep your citizens happy, maintain finances and get the highest score possible out of 100 available points.

If you’re seeking inspiration then there’s plenty of completed cities to gawp at, and you can even save your progress and come back to it at a later point. Remember – it’s all about balance.

IBM CityOne

style="text-align: center;">

A very in-depth city management game that allows you to choose one of four aspects of city life to manage – energy, water, retail and banking. This game also uses a turn-based system which scores you after each turn made.

There’s a fairly chunky registration form to fill out before you can play (which asks for all sorts of intrusive data) but the game itself functions well, especially if you’re a business-minded individual.

Your city starts off sketchy and greyscale, with colour gradually introduced as you implement much-needed change. At times it plays like a big advert for IBM, but remains enjoyable and looks pretty good to boot. Probably not great on slower PCs, especially those with an aversion to resource-heavy Flash.

City Creator

style="text-align: center;">

Not necessarily a simulation or a management game, City Creator simply allows you to do just that – create a sprawling landscape from a set of pre-fabricated buildings and features.

The game features charming pixel art from and an isometric viewpoint, which complements the laid back style of play. Simply drag items from the left hand side of the screen to your city on the right and see what you come up with.

There are 3 building sets to choose from, each with their own unique style. If you register on the site you can save your creations and share them with your friends. If you just want to build a city then City Creator should entertain for a while at least. Be sure to check out their other project Castleford.

Zanpo Virtual Cities

style="text-align: center;">

Lovers of Minecraft and pixel art rejoice in this Flash block-based city building game. Instead of building preset structures and features Zanpo Virtual Cities allows you to build fairly detailed city blocks using individual building pieces.

Users then vote on the best ones, and they get added to the virtual city. This one strikes me a bit like online Lego, and the emphasis is very much on building and not management.

You’ll need to register to build, or you can simply choose a city from the drop down list and click City View and see what everybody else has been building.

CityVille

style="text-align: center;">

I know, I know. You’re sick of FarmVille, so why on earth do you want to hear about CityVille? Well considering there’s already more than 20 million people playing it I figured it would be an injustice to not include it on the list.

If you’re fine with yet another application accessing all your personal data and posting whatever it feels like to your wall then CityVille might appeal. The game is a casual Sim City-esque sim in which you take a humble town and turn it into a sprawling metropolis.

Graphically the game looks awesome, and there’s the added social interactions provided by the Facebook platform. If only it didn’t clog up your feeds, eh?

There are a few more Facebook games, that I’ve left out (it’s quite a saturated market, and Facebook isn’t for everyone).  If you’re interested, they were:

  • Social City
  • Millionaire City
  • Hollywood City

Have you found any other cool city building games? Do you prefer building or managing? Let us know in the comments!

Making Money Uk

The signs features what seems to be a Christmas tree with surrounded with barbed wire and bulbs labeled with various calamities supposedly caused by the holiday.

But under a banner announcing 'the evils of Christmas' it features a message mocking the song the 12 Days of Christmas.

It reads: 'On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me an STD (sexually transmitted disease).
'On the second day debt, on the third rape, the fourth teenage pregnancies and then there was abortion.'

According to the posters, Christmas is also to responsible for paganism, domestic violence, homelessness, vandalism, alcohol and drugs.
The poster also sends people to a website that goes even further:

Every year at this time we see the same ritual, the decorations are dragged out and draped over anything that stands still, Christmas trees are chopped down then erected in millions of front rooms, father Christmas, Christmas dinner, sleeping through the Queens speech, where's the evil in that you might say?
It's all about Father Christmas or it's a celebration of the birth of Jesus many say, the reality is that Christmas is more about office parties, house parties, raves night clubs, alcohol, drugs and all the things that these lead to, like illicit sex, violence, rape, domestic violence, crime, vandalism and so on. The fact is that Christmas is the time when men and women become the most base, immoral creatures who don't care for anything or anyone, their sole purpose becomes enjoyment in whatever depraved form that might take.
Is this what life is about, to be undignified, base, depraved, without any guiding morality. If Jesus were alive today would he join you. Of course you know very well he would not, he is someone who called for goodness and condemned evil.
It also says that claiming God has a son is blasphemy. The campaign's organizer is 27-year-old Abu Rumaysah, the leader of militant group Islam4UK, a group banned by the Home Secretary last year making it a criminal offense to be a member, because it threatened to protest at Wootton Bassett, the town where Britain honors its war dead.

Mr Rumaysah told the Mail that he was unconcerned about offending Christians.

He said: 'Christmas is a lie and as Muslims it is our duty to attack it.

'But our main attack is on the fruits of Christmas, things like alcohol abuse and promiscuity that increase during Christmas and all the other evils these lead to such as abortion, domestic violence and crime.

'We hope that out campaign will make people realize that Islam is the only way to avoid this and convert.'
Mr Rumaysah, said his campaign was not linked to any group and would be put up in cities across the country.

Sister Christine Frost, founder of the East London Neighbours in Poplar charity, said: 'The more posters I saw, the more angry I got. 'Someone is stirring hatred which leaves the road open to revenge attacks or petrol bombs through letter-boxes.'I told the Mayor we are all scared.'If we said such things about Muslims, we'd all be hanging from lamp-posts. [And that's just from the PC police]
Certainly this is just one Islamist organization, but they were able to raise the money for a national poster campaign, and the news reports did not quote one Imam, one British Muslim, saying how horrible these hateful posters are.  Nothing like "religious tolerance" from the religion of peace.

First, Skype and Nimbuzz reported how well they are doing. Then there was the spectacular launch of Viber. And now fring is telling us that they are seeing their quarterly revenues grow at a rapid clip, thanks to the growing popularity of its Android app which is boosting demand for its fringOut service. It seems mobile VoIP is finally seeing its day under the sun.

“We have been bringing in $10,000 in daily revenues from Android phones,” says Jake Levant, vice president of marketing at London/Tel-Aviv-based fring, which makes a multi-platform app for video and voice calling over Wi-Fi and 3G networks. The company has seen a big burst in growth thanks to the expanding Android ecosystem. “We are on track to doubling our revenues in the first quarter of 2011,” Levant added. The company makes money by offering cheap calling plans, called fringOut, for folks who want to reach contacts outside of the fring network.

What’s helped: more incorporation of front facing cameras in new smartphones, which makes fring’s cross-platform video calling service possible. In addition to the iPhone, the HTC EVO and Samsung’s popular Galaxy phones and tablets have front facing cameras, for example. The availability of video calling makes folks install fring and later use it for outbound phone calls.

Even though fring started life on Nokia’s Symbian platform, its recent growth has come thanks to Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android-based smartphones. At present, Android accounts for a third of its total installed base and is growing at a rapid clip, especially in countries like South Korea. North America accounts for 40 percent of fring’s new downloads, making it one of the fastest growing regions for the company. The company says it has more than ten million users who have activated the service and the majority of its calls are destined for Canada, India, the UK and Australia.

The company is still waiting clearance from Apple to launch its fringOut service on the iPhone, however, so the majority of the fringOut revenues coming from North America are from Android phones. But the Android ecosystem has its own headaches with wild variances in device capabilities, different versions of Android available and customized user interfaces. As a result, fring has to modify its app for different handsets and different manufacturers. Nevertheless, that’s fine with Levant because Android is what is turbo-charging its business.

Stock Making Money

Nick Rowe asks me three questions in his Worthwhile Canadian Initiative: If cows were money (a response to Brad DeLong):

Nick: If cows were money, an increased demand for milk would cause a recession. People would stop spending their cows to buy goods and services, because if you spend your cows you don't have as much milk. Was the recession caused by an excess demand for milk, or an excess demand for money?

Me: If the Federal Cow Reserve conducted expansionary monetary policy by selling cows in exchange for promises to deliver milk, then its open market operations in cows would have no stimulative effect on the economy: the cows it sold would not enter the circulating medium but would instead be kept in reserve to replace the milk that the Federal Reserve had bought. Since open-market operations that boost the money stock are ineffective, it is clear that the recession was not caused by an excess demand for money but by an excess demand for milk.

Nick: If gold bars were money, an increased demand for bling would cause a recession. People would stop spending their gold bars to buy goods and services, because if you spend your gold bars you don't have as much bling. Was the recession caused by an excess demand for bling, or an excess demand for money?

Me: If the Federal Jewelry Reserve conducted expansionary monetary policy by selling gold in exchange for other forms of bling, then its open market operations in gold would have no stimulative effect on the economy: the gold it sold would not enter the circulating medium but would instead be used as bling replace the bling that the Federal Reserve had bought. Since open-market operations that boost the money stock are ineffective, it is clear that the recession was not caused by an excess demand for money but by an excess demand for bling.

Nick: If dollars were money, an increased demand for savings would cause a recession. People would stop spending their dollars to buy goods and services, because if you spend your dollars you don't have as much savings. Was the recession caused by an excess demand for savings, or an excess demand for money?

Me: If the Federal Reserve conducted expansionary monetary policy by selling dollars in exchange for other savings vehicles like bonds, then its open market operations in dollars and bonds would have no stimulative effect on the economy: the dollars it sold would not enter the circulating medium but would instead be used as savings vehicles to replace the bonds that the Federal Reserve had bought. Since open-market operations that boost the money stock are ineffective, it is clear that the recession was not caused by an excess demand for money but by an excess demand for savings vehicles.

Now that that is clear, let me say that Nick's post is very good. He goes on:

It has almost come down to a semantic dispute.... e are arguing about the referential opacity of demand functions. If I demand milk, can I be said to demand the medium of exchange, if, as a contingent fact, the medium of exchange just happens to provide milk, and I want the medium of exchange only for its milk?

But it matters. Because the way you frame the cause of the recession may influence where you look for a cure.

If you say that the recession is caused by an excess demand for milk, you start looking for ways to either increase the supply of milk or reduce the demand. Can the government breed some goats, and increase the supply of milk that way? But if you see the recession as being caused by an excess demand for cows, you also start to think of other solutions. Perhaps the government could tax ownership of cows? Even, as a last ditch policy, make the cows stop giving milk? If you think of the recession as being caused by a shortage of milk, then taxing cows, or making the cows stop giving milk, look like totally daft solutions. They wouldn't cure the shortage of milk. But they would cure the recession. With a tax on cows, or if cows stopped giving milk, people would start spending their cows again.

But I also see the point of looking at it from Brad's perspective. An open market operation of cows for goats, where the government imports cows, uses them buy goats, and exports the goats, may not work. The total supply of milk is the same, and if cow's milk and goat's milk are perfect substitutes, people have no additional incentive to get rid of their cows to buy the goods and services that are in excess supply. If, at the margin, the demand for cows is a demand for milk only, the demand for cows will increase one-for-one with the increased supply of cows, if that increased supply of cows is the result of an open market purchase of goats. But why did the demand for cow's milk increase in the first place? Was it that all the goats went dry? Or might the increased demand for milk be a consequence of the recession, and so a consequence of the excess demand for cows? "I had better hang on to my cows, because I won't be able to sell my labour to buy milk in this recession!"

I don't know whether Brad is right about the shortage of other safe savings vehicles being the cause of the increased demand for money qua second best savings vehicle. But, even if he is wrong, this is something that might happen.... orrectly diagnosing the proximate cause of the recession as an excess demand for the good that happens to be the medium of exchange, even if that excess demand is not a demand for that good qua medium of exchange, lets us start thinking about radical solutions.

And we need to start thinking about radical solutions, because as history teaches us, and as this recession reminds us (and judging by the Eurozone we are going to be reminded again) stuff happens. Things go wrong. Safe assets become unsafe. Goats stop giving milk. And we need a monetary system that is robust in the face of human stuff-ups. A shortage of milk is a problem, but it didn't ought to cause a recession too. A shortage of safe assets is a problem, but it didn't ought to cause a recession too. And if it didn't cause an excess demand for the medium of exchange, as a contingent side-effect, it wouldn't cause a recession to compound the original problem. And it's just because those side-effects are contingent, and don't follow of necessity, that I insist on my way of framing the problem. A shortage of safe assets may cause an excess demand for money. An excess demand for money will cause a recession. We can break that first link in the causal chain, because it's only a contingent link. The second link follows of metaphysical necessity, unless we switch to barter.

What's the solution that could prevent an excess demand for the medium of exchange, and so prevent general gluts? Silvio Gessell? Barter on Ebay? Funny money systems where you can't hold a positive balance? God only knows. But we ought to start thinking about it. Quasi-monetarism (which is really Keynesianism too, if you are the sort of Keynesian that recognises that Keynesian economics doesn't make any sense in a barter economy) can be a radical approach.

The one thing this left out, I think, is that "money" becomes a first-rate savings vehicle and store of safe value only when nominal interest rates hit their zero lower bound.

Actually, it left out something else: in comments to Nick, Andrew Harless starts musing about money not just as a medium of exchange and a store of value but a unit of account...

Bianco on Mutual Fund Flows:

• The Wall Street Journal – Investors Pull Cash Out of Bond Funds

Mutual-fund investors continued to pull money out of bond funds in the latest week, and they weren’t just fleeing muni funds. For the first time in two years, they were also shedding corporates and Treasurys. The Investment Company Institute reported Wednesday that $1.66 billion flowed out of bond funds in the week ending Dec. 8, driven mainly by a $1.26 billion outflow from muni funds. Munis have suffered outflows for five straight weeks now, which is the longest stretch in two years. Of particular note, taxable bond funds lost $401 million last week, their first weekly outflow since December 2008. Equity funds saw losses too, down $1.4 billion last week. Long-term mutual-fund outflows totaled $3.25 billion in the latest week. The data marked the third week in the past month of net outflows for bond funds, which had seen a 99-week stretch of inflows following three months straight of outflows in the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis.

• MarketBeat (WSJ Blog) – Has The Great Bond Selloff Begun?: A Couple Thoughts

Mutual-fund investors are still yanking money out of bond funds, and they’re not just fleeing munis any more. For the first time in two years, they’re also shedding corporates and Treasurys…A new wrinkle in the latest data, though, is that taxable bond funds lost $401 million last week, their first weekly outflow since December 2008. Lest anybody think this is the start of the long-awaited great migration out of bonds and into stocks, equity funds lost $1.4 billion last week. It looks like fund investors are putting their cash in money-market funds, mainly. This is consistent with the broader sense that nobody’s making big bets on anything before the end of the year.

Comment

The weekly mutual funds described above are shown in the chart below.  If this is the start of a great exodus from bond funds, then it only began last week as the outflows expanded beyond just muni funds.

Highlighted in the story above is one of the great misconceptions about bond fund flows.  Bond mutual fund investors are not struggling with a choice between stock or bond funds. As we detailed here, the massive flows into bond funds came from 0% yielding money market funds.  Only about 3% of the inflows into bond funds went into long-term Treasury funds.  An over-sized amount went into short-term muni and corporate funds.  In other words, the public traded a 0% money market fund for a 1% short-term bond fund.  Even with the recent rise in rates, this has been a good trade for them so far.

We would argue if higher rates are going to chase mutual fund investors out of bond funds, they are not going into stock funds.  Instead they would go back to 0% money market funds.

Stock funds have suffered 32 consecutive weeks of outflows, every week since the market highs in April.  As we explained here, the public is not buying stock funds because they did in huge numbers earlier this decade and they are still sitting on losses.  They are not interested in doubling down on a bad trade.  Further market rallies will only reduce losses and not create the Federal Reserve’s much hoped-for wealth effect.

Secrets to Making Money

B. Wayne Hughes, the chairman of Public Storage, was American Crossroads'
first official donor. He gave the group an additional $950,000 in late
October, and now has contributed to $3.5 million to American Crossroads,
according to the Center's research.

Trevor Rees-Jones, the
president and chief executive officer of Dallas-based Chief Oil and Gas,
has given American Crossroads $2 million this year.

Robert Rowling, the chief executive officer of TRT Holdings, has
given the group $2.5 million since its founding. Notably, his company
has also given $2.5 million from its treasury -- including a $1
million infusion of cash in June.

And Texas home builder Bob Perry, famous for his financial support of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth,
which produced ads critical of Democrat John Kerry's Vietnam military
service during the 2004 presidential election, also made a series of investments in
American Crossroads totaling $7 million since early September.

Jonathan Collegio, the spokesman for American Crossroads, told the Washington Post on Thursday that Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies -- a sister organization
of American Crossroads that is not required to disclose information
about its donors -- raised an additional $43 million this year.

Crossroads
GPS, legally defined as a 501(c)4 nonprofit designed to promote "social welfare,"
spent $17 million on political messages and advertisements this election
cycle, according to the Center's research. Crossroads GPS saw its preferred candidates win in 71 percent of the races in which it invested money.

Combined, Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads spent more on outside political messages than all other groups except the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

The companies that made direct contributions to American Crossroads
between Oct. 14 and Election Day are listed below, along with the amount
given and date of the donation.

Dawnmarie Souza is an emergency medical technician who got into a dispute with her supervisor. That evening, she sat down at her computer and typed an angry post onto her Facebook page. She called him a "17" -- the company's term for a psychiatric patient -- and mocked him in other ways, according to the ambulance company that employed her. Other employees added sympathetic comments, further criticizing the boss.

Her actions were a clear violation of the company's social media policy, which reads: "Employees are prohibited from making disparaging, discriminatory, or defamatory comments when discussing the Company or the employee's superiors, co-workers and/or competitors." And so she was fired.

This may all seem straightforward enough, but then the plot took an unexpected twist when the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) filed a complaint against American Medical Response (AMR) the ambulance company that dismissed Souza. The firing was illegal, the NLRB said, and so was the social media policy that led to it. The National Labor Relations Act protects employees' right to discuss their working conditions, it decreed, and it didn't matter whether they did so around a water cooler or over Facebook.

An administrative law judge will begin hearing the case in January, and it's expected to be several months, at least before there's a final decision. But even if it wins its case, the company will have spent untold amounts of money and time, and endured months of the kind of publicity no company ever wants.

And yet, its policy is hardly unusual. Thousands of companies have policies forbidding employees from badmouthing their employers, co-workers, superiors, or competitors on social media. Some have rules against naming their employer at all. Others bar workers from discussing their salaries. Any of these could lead to trouble with the Feds.

A newer, tougher standard

The filing has left employment lawyers scrambling, in part because NLRB practices appear to have changed. "There was a case based on a similar policy that came up about two years ago and the NLRB general counsel declined to issue a complaint," says Seth Borden, a partner in the Labor and Employment group at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. Now, he says, the Board has a new general counsel. "The Board has signaled a willingness to take a broader view of employees' rights."

Companies should be concerned about this new direction, he says. "This is the first prominent instance of social media being viewed through the prism of traditional labor law," he says. "It's the tip of the iceberg."

Given the new reality, many employers are wondering whether it would be best to scrap social media policies altogether. But legal experts still agree you're better off with a policy than without one. "I'm encouraging my clients to have and enforce a social network policy in order to prevent disclosure of confidential information, trade secrets, and business plans," says Jerry Lutkus, partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP. "And these policies should tie in to their anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies."

Since you do need to have a social media policy, how can you make sure it won't get your company in trouble? Here are some issues to consider:

Avoid 'disparagement'

According to several legal experts, without this one word AMR could probably have stayed out of trouble. "If you took the disparagement language out of this policy, it becomes very hard to argue that it's invalid on its face," Lutkus says. At the same time, he acknowledges, without that wording it would have been hard for AMR to discipline Souza based on her Facebook post.

Have your policy acknowledge the law

One of the simplest ways to make sure your policy won't violate a law is to say so, right in the policy. "Your policy may need protective language that says the application of this policy will be consistent with the National Labor Relations Act," advises Maria L. Petrillo, a member at Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC in Philadelphia. And Borden recommends taking it one step further, and having a blanket disclaimer attached to your entire employment policy that no application of your policy will violate any applicable local, state, or federal law.

Don't cover all the bases

Companies sometimes try to play it safe when writing policies, trying to come up with blanket language that can cover any possible contingency. But that very strategy can get you in trouble if the NLRB sees your policy as overly broad. On the other hand, a policy that's too narrow can leave you unprotected if an employee does something you hadn't thought of. "It's tricky for employers to get that balance between too broad and too narrow," Borden says. "But I think they ought to try."

Understand what's protected

Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act protects employees' right to engage in "concerted activities" for bargaining, mutual aid, and protection. That means it's especially risky to interfere any time employees discuss working conditions among themselves. Keep in mind, though, that employees who make defamatory or discriminatory statements can lose that protection.

Don't invite trouble

The AMR case began when Souza was ordered to write a response to a customer's complaint about her. She asked to have her union representative present but her boss refused to allow it. "Saying no to a union representative raises a red flag," Petrillo says. Without that, experts agree, the NLRB might not have picked AMR to make an example of.

Plan to review your policy at least every two years

"Case law is changing very rapidly and social media is changing rapidly as well, so it's a moving target," notes Christine Hueber, head of ChristineHueber.com which provides social media services and advice to companies here and abroad. "What was right six months ago may not be right three months from now. Social media policies pose interesting questions, because it is such an intersection of business and private life. And we're still finding our way."

Making Money Scams

This year, more than 600 taxi drivers were implicated in a giant taxi scam in which drivers overcharged passengers more than $1.1 million by flipping switches on their meters that kicked in higher rates. In the wake of the scandal, the Taxi and Limousine Company scrambled to portray the incident as a series of isolated incidents and mistakes by a select number of drivers. But according to one of those taxi scammers, these were no Lee Harvey Oswalds: it really was all a giant evil conspiracy!

According to driver Joseph Kastner, a group of drivers would meet together at cabby conferences in garages around the city and plot their nefarious schemes. "I met a series of drivers who decided to rob the public. They were actually having meetings at my old garage," Kastner, 49, told the TLC during a Sept. 30 administrative court hearing. Kastner is one of those accused drivers; he is charged with allegedly cheated 3,925 passengers out of $7,756, the sixth highest amount for an individual driver. Kastner claims that he wanted to become a whistleblower, alleging that the scams were much bigger than let on previously, and that he had stuff on the TLC as well, but no one took his offer: "I tried to tell them over and over again at the hearing. They didn't listen to a word I said. They just don't want to hear it," he told the Post.

So is Kastner trying to escape his fate by alleging a citywide conspiracy, making up stories to look better, or is there really an underground network of thieving taxi drivers plotting to steal unwitting customer's money? TLC obviously didn't take his claims seriously, but the Post sides with Kastner, saying that other cabbies and industry insiders confirm his story, and bad hacks pull other stunts such as charging drivers to put on the heat, pressing the "extra" button on tolls and bridges, and posing as livery drivers at airports and charging more than double the flat fee of $45 to Manhattan. Whether or not the conspiracy is as widespread as Kastner would have you believe, the best thing you can do is consult the Passenger Bill of Rights, and always be vigilant of extra charges of any kind.

I’d feel better about ignoring the plight of this nation’s 20M unemployed and underemployed people if it wasn’t for the fact that consumable commodities have gotten so high. I don’t care how much money Donald Trump has but the World Record for corn eating is 46 ears in a sitting so, no matter how hard The Donald tries, he can’t consume enough corn to make up for the millions of people who have to cut back this holiday season. While 3D TVs and IPhones and Mercedes only need a few million customers to have a good year – it doesn’t make sense for broadly consumable commodities to assume the bottom 80% can continue to buy at these prices.

Of course, don't go getting too bearish now.  We'll be taking our bearish money and running this morning as we have a $45Bn money drop scheduled by the Fed next week and, while I don't think it's going to be enough to turn the tide if the Dollar keeps rising, I don't think it's worth risking much to fight it.

As usual, we will get back to cool, liquid cash and simply ride the waves, looking for the next opportunity to dip our toes into.  The EU needs to get their act together but if you take a look at this video of UK's Godfrey Bloom calling Germany's Martin Schultz "an undemocratic fascist" and getting ejected from the meeting - you'll see that they aren't all that close on coming to a general agreement on how to deal with their little PIIGies.  Here's another "must see" video, an impassioned speech by UK's Nigel Farage condemning the entire proceeding!

Man I love European Politics!  You might think that the EU spiraling out of control and a possible war in Korea would be great for gold but then you wouldn't be a PSW Member because we know it's ALL about the dollar and money flying out of the Euro doesn't go to gold, it goes to Dollars and Yen and a rising dollar is NOT good for gold and we'll get a nice move down there as the dollar moves back up.  Our re-entry point on gold is $1,150 so we have about $200 to go, which is 14%, which is about Dollar 88 so that will be fun to watch if the Dollar gets a real squeeze but, at the moment, we are only counting on the Dollar hitting 82 as that's the 200 dma but woe unto the commodity pushers if it breaks over that mark so stabilizing the Euro will be critical this weekend for commodity bulls.  Hopefully Bloom and Schultz will work out their differences by then (end extreme sarcasm font).

Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero must be a PSW Member as he is taking my advice this morning and going directly after bond speculators, "ABSOLUTELY" ruling out an EU rescue of Spain, saying: "I should warn those investors who are short-selling Spain that they are going to be wrong and will go against their own interests." Meanwhile, Portugal has denied a report that several EU countries as well as the ECB are pressuring the country to apply for a bailout. Separately, Portugal's finance minister says the EU cannot force his government to accept a bailout. The spread between Portuguese debt and German debt now stands at 444 basis points - that's 4.44% MORE for Portugal to borrow money than Germany.

The EU Commission is now (8am) suggesting doubling the size of its $588Bn bailout and that is boosting EU markets, who were down close to 2% going into lunch and are now recovering slightly on that news. That's how quickly things can change around here.  Did I mention how much I like cash lately.  Those dollars are getting more valuable every day!

So it will be take the money and run this morning, especially if our Dollar fails to hold 80.50, which would be disappointing on such bad news from Europe.  We'll be watching copper between $3.70 and $3.75 to give us a directional signal as well as oil at the $82.50 line, which would be tragic if it fails.  Natural gas has been our lagging commodity of choice and they are finally getting themselves together with a pop to $4.44 as LNG is once again being touted as driving future demand.  It's all nonsense, of course - all LNG does is enable a two year supply of natural gas to be shoved into frozen storage but TBoone and his industry buddies have suckered enough governments and investors to buy into this nonsense that it has taken on a life of it's own and we are just going with the flow.  CHK is the way to play Nat Gas long-term and they are quite a deal at $22.

Of course it's Black Friday and it's all about Retail Sales today and expectations are through the roof for a FANTASTIC holiday shopping season because all the people on TV (average salary $200,000) and all the analysts (average salary $250,000) and all the Retail CEOs (average salary $2.5M) and all the shopping mall owners (hanging on by a thread and will say anything it takes) say it's going to be a great holiday because everything is fine and all of their neighbors who haven't lost their homes yet are planning to buy something.  Isn't that special?

Members, please take the time to participate in the 2010 PSW Holiday Shopping Survey. Last year we were able to accurately predict what turned out to be disappointing retail sales from our observations - we have a lot of very sharp people with a wealth of experience to draw on and I urge you to read last year's post and comments to get an idea of what we're looking for.

Have a great weekend,
